The Table Story

It was the end of July and everyone in U.A.E was just waiting to finish their work and get back to home because tomorrow Eid starts.  I was doing my usual work at the office- checking mails, making reports, staring at the clock when will it be 4'O clock (oh jeez that's the toughest part).

If you are thinking my office is like a well build furnished furniture with latest high speed laptops, and big cabinets for each employees, a separate meeting room, a modern suite toilet, and good yummy foods from the canteen, then your perfectly wrong. My office is like a shop. It's small- no canteen, no modern suite toilet, just a small nest with little division, a division where we can see each other what we are doing. My place is just situated at the corner of the room where no one can see me from outside. It’s the best place that I have chosen. A better place for money handling jobs, a less chance for someone to see what you're doing and also a good place to sleep.

Somehow I did have a good feeling that day, because the weather was awesome. It was cloudy but humid, and it’s so pleasant to see during summer. I could rarely see such climates during summer, but alas it happened, and I should thank the universe for making it beautiful.

Since I do not have much work to do, I was simply browsing internet. I usually go through buzzfeed just to get ideas, tricks, gossips....fun platform to be there when you’re bored or doing nothing. No one is there at the office and that's how most of my time is spent.

I know, I know and it's horrible. Trust me don't ever join in a company where you will be spending most of the time alone. The good stuff is that no one will be monitoring you unless you don't have cameras around, but the bad stuff- you will get weirder and weirder day by day. Maybe a quality time with yourself is good, but seriously no…not so long.

As I was going through articles through internet, I heard the door opening. For instance, I thought it would be one of my colleagues, but no it wasn't. It was a lady.

She was short, pretty and had a good smile.  She came inside and asked for a favor. She wanted me to keep the table. Since she is short and couldn't carry on her own, she asked if she can keep the table inside at my shop, so that her husband could pick it up later when he comes back from work.

Without any second thought, I said yes. She went outside and came back with the table and kept inside near the entrance. She asked when will the office be closed and asked my name. After answering to her questions, she gave a relief smile and said 'Thank you dear' and left instantly.

I looked at the table. It was white with brown borders, cute little tiny drawers on the left side and a small open space on the right side.

I went back to my seat thinking what I should do next. Should I throw away the old bills? Nah, no time. Should I do the maintenance report? Nah, it would be nice if I do it on the next day.  Yes you can see it for yourself, I'm a big procrastinator.

It was 3:15 p.m and I didn’t see anybody coming over to office to pick up the table. I realized suddenly.. I haven’t asked any details about her. Who is she? What’s her name? Where does she live? Did she just say that her husband will pick up before 3:00 or 4: 00 p.m. I do not have a single info about her.

My mind started to crawl with thoughts on asking the worst questioning part- What if???

What if the husband comes to office after I leave? What if he comes the next week, should I still keep it in the office? What if he doesn't shows up at all for a month and if someone throws the table out of the office, and if the husband comes back and asks for it, what will I say?

At that point, I realized I was so in trouble. I cannot sit and wait patiently for that man to come. I was walking around the office, and turning to the table to see the clock. It was 3:30 p.m, and still no sign of him.
Somehow I wanted to deviate my negative thoughts. I started listening to songs, checking emails and believe that he will come before I leave.

It was 3:45, not even a single bird pass through in front of my office. I have no other idea as to what shall I do next. Only thing I can do is to wait, wait and wait…I always kept looking out the door every single minute. I started to ask myself as to why did I allow her to do that? What made me to do this? How can I be so stupid for not asking anything about her?

As these thoughts started to creep up, I decided that I had to call my boss, and talk about it. I can visualize myself for being cursed by him, but I had no choice. I just need to accept my mistake and take responsibility for what I have caused.

I called him with a little bit of hesitation. My boss took the phone and asked what the matter is. I didn’t begin my story very well, but somehow he followed me and asked if I had taken any details about this person. I could feel the heat around me. I just have to pull my dumb mask and show it that I was stupid enough for not asking anything.

What happens next is like this- a huge elephant hit the ground, made the world tumble around, wrecking every single thing into smaller and smaller pieces, and putting a crap on it. I have nothing else to say but to hear his sayings and enlighten my mind with ‘THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING??!’

As I was listening to his ground-breaking words, I noticed a man coming towards the shop. He opened the door, and looked around for something. He was short, cute face and had a beautiful smile. I hanged up my boss. (Wow..who didnt do that?, But later on I called him to tell the good news)

I asked the man,‘How can I help you?’
He said ‘My wife kept a table over here, can I take it?’

As he said those lines, the only word that it ringed in my ears was ‘Table’.

I bursted out with relief.  I said, ‘I was waiting for you.’

He gave me a smile and said sorry for keeping me wait. He took the table, and pushed outside and looked at me and said sorry again, in his deepest respectful way. I couldn’t say anything else but to smile back again and said ‘that’s okay’.

Now you must be thinking, what am I trying to say from this story?

When you help a person, you can actually feel greatness in you after you received their thanks that come from bottom of their heart. In today’s world, we lack such helping mentality because of what we see around us- theft, cheating, killing, and all those bad deed that we created. With that vision, most of the people are not ready to do favor or to help someone specially those who needs the most.

I’m also a pessimist, thinking ways of me getting into trouble with that table. I’m not saying you should open hands wide and accept things whoever comes up to you. For your safety, you will do what’s best for you, but you should not completely deny someone’s favor. The end result is what you really need to go through. It is just a beautiful feeling, a feeling where you love yourself even more.

For those who have hard times on themselves, start helping and make people happy around you. You should do this in not expecting any return. It’s like a karma- what goes around comes around.
